Temple Bar Area

Temple Bar is Dublin's cultural quarter, located on the south bank of the River Liffey, an area often referred to as the Old City.

Along the quaint cobbled streets of Temple Bar you will find some of Dublin's top restaurants, bars, theatres and cafes - all of which are on the door step of the Temple Bar Hotel.

Temple Bar has a unique community spirit and it plays host to an array of events throughout the year. These include weekly designer mart and food and book markets as well as regular festivals including Tradfest, Handel's Day and the festival of Russian Culture to name but a few. On St Patrick’s Day, Temple Bar is THE place to be, with the streets running green and are packed until the early hours as the party continues into the night.

In the evenings this vibrant area comes alive as people stream from all over the city and fill the many restaurants and bars which fill the air with both traditional Irish and modern music.

The main action is concentrated in and around the central square where buskers and street performers entertain the crowds. Branching off from this is a maze of tiny cobbled streets and busy thoroughfares, lined with world famous bars, restaurants, night spots and trendy shops. It is also home to the city's two major cathedrals, St Patrick's and Christ Church.

But somehow, it copes admirably well with its personality clash of holiness and consumerism. While the idea of awe-inspiring monuments to Christianity and raucous parties of staggering stags existing side by side may have caused friction among the locals, it seems to go almost without a hitch as far as visitors are concerned. The rule of thumb is simple: if you want to raise hell, hit the pubs and clubs of Temple Bar after dark; if it's heaven you're interested in, stick to the cathedrals.
